Watch the new BetMGM commercial with Wayne Gretzky
If anyone could skate on a fountain in front of a casino in Las Vegas, it would be “The Great One”.
In a new commercial for BetMGM, brand ambassador and hockey legend Wayne Gretzky shows how the self-proclaimed “King of Sportsbooks” has an eye on a sport and the country that loves it: ice hockey and the Canada. Gretzky became a brand ambassador for BetMGM in June.
BetMGM promises to launch its popular bookie in Canada later this year as the National Hockey League season begins. The 2021-22 NHL season kicked off on October 12 and includes an expansion team in Seattle.
Canadian citizens have been eager to use popular sports betting to bet on hockey and other sports since the country’s laws were changed to allow for an increase in betting earlier this year.
When will BetMGM be available in Canada?
Canada has offered legal sports betting for many years, but only allows parlay betting and only through sports betting managed by government sponsored organizations. As a result, sports betting has been less popular in the country than in the United States, where fans have the opportunity to have competitive odds.
In June 2021, Bill C-218 was passed in the Senate and became law in Canada in August. Canadian law requires each province to pass its own laws and establish rules that will regulate sports betting. None of the provinces have yet partnered with and launched a major third-party bookmaker like BetMGM, but Gretzky’s presence as a brand ambassador indicates it is coming soon.
The largest province in the country, Ontario, currently offers the PROLINE + bookmaker. It is a government-run sports betting site regulated by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). It allows bettors to place bets on a single event through the website of the public entity.
BetMGM sets strategy to dominate Canada
Gretzky is a national hero in Canada and is considered by most experts to be the greatest hockey player in history. He holds the NHL record for most goals, assists and points. He also achieved a record 50 hat-tricks during his Hall of Fame career. Gretzky’s status gives BetMGM even more luster as they are about to launch their bookmaker in Canada.
Once crazy hockey fans have more options for placing bets on a game in Ontario, and possibly the rest of Canada, the industry is expected to explode into growth. OLG has registered more than 3.6 million bets since launching its new PROLINE + sports betting site in late August. They noted in a recent poll that 61 percent of punters place bets on the NHL.
