The Lloyd Center ice rink is the heart of the Lloyd Center shopping mall. Ralph B. Lloyd (1879-1953) was a California oil magnate who wanted to move power from downtown to the Eastside. In 1910 he began purchasing hundreds of lots totaling up to 50 acres of land; Mr Lloyd sought political support in the 1920s for various parks, a hotel, a business park and the largest shopping center in the world. However, his dreams would eventually be postponed by the Great Depression and then by the shortage of building materials during World War II. When Ralph died in 1953, his four daughters: Eleanor, Elizabeth, Ida and Lula promised to fulfill his dream of building the largest shopping mall in the country with a year-round ice rink for his descendant, an aspiring competitive skater. .
Skating is a great way to relieve stress; physical activity releases endorphins in the brain. Learning to ice skate also builds confidence and burns 500 calories per hour! Group lessons are offered in a comfortable, air-conditioned environment where you can make friends for life. Enrolling in Skating School will connect you to a thriving community of families, coaches, and skaters of all ages. Group lessons can be supplemented with: private lessons, freestyle sessions, internal competitions and themed theatrical shows, including Minions, Nutcracker and Thriller.
Once enrolled in group lessons, a student has the flexibility to skate as often or as little as they wish among the 62 hours of public skating sessions offered each week with free admission. Our 600 new rental skates start from a size 8 figure skate for the beginner skater up to size 11 for women or size 10 for men. Our comfortable hockey skates are suitable for adults from 5 to 15 years old.
Our pro-shop has a wide selection of Jackson skates for sale from children’s size 8 to women’s size 7. All skaters have in and out privileges for the day. That means you can shop or take snack breaks to enjoy a pretzel, bubble tea, Cinnabon, or a meal on the third floor; then come back and skate again.
We are now taking reservations for groups after hours, holiday parties, birthday parties and broomball. You will have exclusive use of the ice rink and party rooms from 8:00 p.m. A basic skating lesson is the safest bet if you’ve never been on the ice before or haven’t skated since childhood.
