Makled wins state title, runner-up in separate events at state high school figure skating championships – Press & Guide
The Dearborn Unified Figure Skating Team was well represented at the Laura Maki State High School Figure Skating Championships at the Kensington Valley Ice House in Brighton on March 26-27.
Edsel Ford High School freshman Olivia Makled was state champion in the Prejuvenile Excel Freestyle Solo and finished in second place in the Pre-Gold Solo Ice Dance event.
She skated to the music of “West Side Story” for her title event.
Her Dearborn High School freshman teammate Jillian Furlow placed 5th in the state in the preliminary/prejuvenile artistic solo event.
Six skaters also competed in the team event, finishing 12th overall. In addition to Makled and Furlow, senior Olivia Cornett (Dearborn High), juniors Lilly Lawson (Edsel Ford) and Emily Bass (Edsel Ford), second Kaydence Grech (Edsel Ford) also skated.
The team is coached by Victoria Lebryk and Jaclyn Young.
Since Dearborn Public Schools does not offer the sport as a varsity sport, it has a self-funded “unified” team made up of athletes from Dearborn High Schools, Edsel Ford and Fordson, with a port of tether located at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center.
In all, over 200 skaters from the Upper and Lower Peninsulas competed.
