Courtesy Photo The Alpena Figure Skating Club held their very first summer skating camp August 2-6. The camp had 20 skaters in attendance. The skating camp was sponsored by the Community Foundation Youth Counseling Grant, the Besser Foundation and the First Federal Legacy Fund. Thanks to the support of the community through these grants, the camp was maintained at a very reasonable cost for the skaters. During camp, skaters worked on skating techniques, on and off ice choreography, group routines and off-ice skills such as skate maintenance, stretches, jumps, spins and crafts. The week ended with a small exhibit for family and friends. During the show, the skaters performed group routines learned during camp as well as solos that the acrobatic skaters choreographed during the week. Registration for the next figure skating season will take place September 20 and 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Arena. Skaters can also try figure skating for free on Monday, September 20 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
