Some people say that skateboarding even puts them in a meditative state, so it’s the perfect stress-relieving activity.

When you start skateboarding, you join a huge community that is only going to stop growing anytime soon. Skateboarding brings people from all walks of life together, so it can be a great way to meet like-minded people and expand your social circle. Many skateboarders claim that the sport has helped them make lifelong friends. Without skateboarding, these friends might never have crossed paths. Tatiya Maruco of the University of Southern California studied skateboarding communities across the country in 2019 and felt moved by the apparent connections in these diverse social groups.

“No matter who you are, no matter how old you are, if you skateboard, you’re part of a community,” she explained. “A city council member or even an investment banker can be a skateboarder, and those relationships are important.”

It’s an affordable hobby

It’s smart to skate with a helmet and pads, at least while you’re learning, but you can do without them if you’re really on a budget (as long as you’re in a safe environment). Many skaters too learn basic tricks like ollies from online guides or other skaters, so they don’t need to pay for formal lessons.

Skateboarding is a perfect transportation option. Jump on your board and you’ll get where you need to go faster than walking or jogging. Skateboarding also requires no fuel other than your own energy, so it’s a great green alternative to driving. A skateboard isn’t as bulky as a bicycle, so you can easily store it under a desk or even transport it once you reach your destination. Many people skate to school or work every day to save money, stay fit, and have fun.


It will make you stronger

Skateboard Uses virtually every muscle in the body, so it’s a great way to build strength. You’ll engage your core as you work to keep your balance, especially on uneven surfaces. Since you typically go from pacing to explosive bursts of energy when doing tricks, skateboarding works your core the same way a high-intensity workout or spin class does. Skaters’ arms, legs, feet and eyes all work together to keep them straight and master new tricks. If you’ve always felt a bit clumsier than the average person, skateboarding can help improve your precision and coordination.
